“They are not the decision-makers – we are” En narrativ studie om den ungerska nationalismens uppbyggnad och funktioner.

After Fidesz took office in 2010 Hungarian national politics has transformed to become more nationalistic. Despite a lot of negative criticism from both inside and outside the country – due to controversial constitutional changes – Fidesz is still in power. This thesis seeks to increase the scholarly understanding of nationalism in Europe and especially in Hungary. More specifically, this thesis investigates how Fidesz stories about nationalism are built up and for what specific purposes. This is investigated through a narrative analysis with data collected from 38 interviews conducted between 2015-2017 in the Hungarian radio show Kossuth Rádio. Here, the Hungarian Prime minister, Viktor Orbán has been able to speak freely about things such as migration and the characteristics of the Hungarian people. The theoretical framework used stems from Rogers Smith “Stories of Peoplehood” and Benedict Anderson’s “The Imagined Community”. The overall findings show that stories about Hungarian nationalism is built on a successful mixing of political, economic and ethically constitutive stories. These stories function as a way for Fidesz to legitimise its grip on power and to define and maintain their definition of the Hungarian national identity
